Any excuse for a party! William is back in steam after a lengthy overhaul and rebuild!!!
Join us for our Sentinel Gala on Sunday 26th March 2017
To celebrate Sentinel 9959 - William being back in service, on the rails, we are throwing him a party on our Sentinel Gala Day. William, built in 1956, is named after Sir William Stanier, the Chief Engineer of the LMS railway and as part of our Gala celebrations our friends from Angel Lane will be reenacting William's naming ceremony by the great man himself. William has had a major overhaul and has been restyled into LMS shape and livery with a distinctive LMS whistle too!
William will be joined in steam by stable-mate Gervase. Gervase started life as a Manning Wardle locomotive in 1900 and was converted by Sentinel to a Vertical Boiler locomotive in 1928.
William and Gervase have a Sentinel diesel friend too, Elizabeth. Elizabeth began her life as a steam engine like William and was converted to a diesel at Thomas Hill's works in Rotherham in 1965.
William, Gervase and Elizabeth will all be working trains during the Gala.
Not wishing to be left out of the fun, Sentinel number 9376, from 1947, will be making a rare appearance from the depths of the railway yard too, but alas not in steam because she awaits her restoration fate.
Guests make the party!
Special guests will be joining us at our Sentinel Gala Party too.....
Sentinel Road Steam Waggon Model S4, owned by Mr Ian Vinton, will join us in steam.
Sentinel Road Steam Standard Waggon Number 1488 "The Denby Flyer", built 1917, from J.C. Ward & Sons, will be partying in steam too.
The road waggons with William and Gervase will be posing for a photoshoot, so steam enthusiasts and photographers this a rare opportunity to get an unusal Sentinel shot!
The Yorkshire Group of 16mm Narrow Gauge Modellers will be displaying their Dixon Green Light Railway with live steam Sentinel locomotives, and others, exhibited.
From Sheffield, The Sentinel Brewing Company, will be featuring their beers and food in our On-Train Bar, and station, and with their help we are launching a Sir William Ale to mark this great day.

Things to consider:
There will be no on-site parking for visitors and volunteers at Elsecar Station. There is public parking in the village but this will become full very quickly. We recommend you use public transport if possible. We are 10 minutes walk from the main line Elsecar Station which has direct trains from Sheffield, Barnsley, Wakefield and Leeds. Bus routes pass through the village too. Please consider car sharing.
Children are welcome to come and celebrate with us, but please consider their supervision carefully as trains and road vehicles will be moving throughout the site. Stewards will be on hand to supervise safety.
Sentinel engines (rail and road) have vertical boilers with a chimney which goes straight up from the firebox. These engines produce a lot of smoke, sparks and cinders. Please do not wear your best white coat and please leave synthetic clothes (like down padded coats) at home as sparks and cinders may damage them. Elsecar Heritage Railway Ltd, and our partners, can not be held responsible for damaged clothing. You will get sooty!
Our station buffet and shop will be open for the sale of hot drinks, soft drinks, chocolate, snacks and gifts. Sentinel Brewing Company will be running bars with snack food. We are next door to the Elsecar Heritage Centre which has two tea-rooms and there are pubs that serve food in the village too.
Wheelchair users are most welcome and most of the site is accessible to you. On the train, we can only offer access to the parcel area of the Guard's Van, via a portable ramp.
Our line is one mile long (currently being extended to two miles, but not open yet).
Adjacent to our line is the 1795 Newcomen Engine built by Earl Fitzwilliam, now owned by Barnsley Council, as part of The Elsecar Heritage Centre. The engine house will be open on this day with demonstrations taking place at 12:00, 13:00 and 14:00. The council welcome a £2 donation to witness the engine demonstrations from inside the engine house. There is also an one hour guided tour of Elsecar starting at 15:15 from The Heritage Centre Visitor Centre.
WE HOPE TO SEE YOU AT OUR UNIQUE SENTINEL GALA AND TRUST YOU WILL HAVE A GREAT TIME WITH US!

Our flag ship locomotive - Peckett 2150 "Mardy Monster" is undergoing a major overhaul. We hoped, when scheduling our current timetable, that the locomotive would be back in steam for Easter Saturday 2017, however this is now not going to be possible. Here is a news release from our Board....
LATEST NEWS ON MARDY MONSTER
Elsecar Heritage Railway's Board of Trustees, with MR C. H. Stenton, joint owners of Mardy Monster, have commissioned an additional engineering inspection of Peckett 2150 Mardy Monster's frames and associated components. This due diligence recommends that additional work is carried out on Spring Hangers and Shackles before the engine is put back into service.
Without the new work, there is a risk that newly replaced motion components may experience excessive wear, undoing the investment made in the locomotive.
The owners have agreed that this work should be commissioned, as funds allow, therefore Mardy Monster will not be reentering service on Easter Saturday, as previously planned.
Mardy Monster fans will no doubt be disappointed by this news, but we are sure will support our vision and endeavour to ensure this unique locomotive returns to service having received the full attention it deserves.
Our Event - “Welcome Back Mardy Monster”, on Easter Saturday 15th April, will go ahead but rather than Mardy Monster being in steam, will focus on showing visitors the engineering progress with the locomotive. Planned work on the boiler and motion will be complete by then, though the locomotive may not now be reassembled. We are sure that visitors will appreciate the opportunity to closely examine work to date, as presented by our engineering team.
Our Sentinel Gala on Sunday 26th March continues as planned.
We know that Mardy Monster has a large fan base who are eager to see the locomotive running again. Like you we are sad that it will be a few months longer before she returns to steam, but we want to show you what we have been doing. So on Saturday 15th April we will open our workshops to visitors to get up close to Mardy Monster and see how the work is progressing. Mardy's restored boiler, motion and wheels will be back to view and our engineers will be on hand to explain the work.
There is no charge for this event, but please feel free to empty your wallets into our collecting buckets for the Mardy Monster fund! So far we have spent well over £100,000 on the locomotive's overhaul, so we will be most grateful of your help to raise the funds needed to finish the job.
Passengers trains will run on this day, pulled by a steam engine (not Mardy Monster), at 12:00, 13:00 and 14:00 and our normal fares apply for these.
